The road to ES Design West: Location, location, location

Right now, your thoughts are probably turning toward the July 4 holiday – and why not? But it is worth remembering that as the next working week starts, the inaugural ES Design West will take place alongside SEMICON West at the Moscone Center in San Francisco (July 9-11).

One key element is that for the Valley-based EDA and IP audiences who could not make it to this year’s DAC in Las Vegas, ES Design West is literally next door (and DAC will follow suit by itself colocating with SEMICON next year).

“[We are] attending ES Design West for two reasons. First, the new show is a great way to expand our company’s reach, and the entire EDA industry’s reach. Second, our goal is to offer choices to our static sign-off customers – and the San Francisco Bay Area is clearly a convenient location for numerous system and semiconductor companies,” says Prakash Narain, President and CEO of verification specialist Real Intent.

“Location, location, location,” as your real estate agent likes to say. And with the new event only a stone’s throw away, you still have time to organize your attendance.

“Chip designers and verification engineers hailing from Silicon Valley are a car ride away from learning more about essential verification IP for their new and ongoing projects,” adds Barry Lazow, Vice President of Sales at SmartDV. His company will be showcasing its new product for the OpenCAPI server bus platform during ES Design West.

Of course, there have to be more reasons that simple proximity to attract you to the show. At the high level, the colocation of the two shows (and a range of other related events during the week) demonstrates the extent to which different parts of the semiconductor supply chain are becoming interrelated and interdependent.

“[ES Design West] is an opportunity to do something new through closer collaboration with designers, device developers, manufacturers and the electronic design system ecosystem,” says Thomas Blaesi, Vice President for Global Marketing at Silvaco.

To that end, the program will host dedicated EDA and IP strands – notably the six Design Pavilion sessions – alongside more broadly based sessions that reflect today’s higher level and wider concerns.

The 34th Wearable Technologies Conference will have its USA edition on Tuesday July 9 and Wednesday July 10. Speakers will present from companies such as Qualcomm, Maxim Integrated, Stanford University and even the NFL.

Some of the world’s leading international research groups will also be talking about their latest work.

On Monday, July 8, one day before SEMICON West opens its exhibition doors, technologists from imec are offering two free-to-attend events as part of the research institute’s Future Summits series. In the morning, its team will discuss ‘Semiconductors for Health’ and in the afternoon they will turn to that most all-industry of challenges, ‘Scaling’.

On Tuesday, July 9, at 5pm in the evening, a joint presentation from CEA-Leti and the Fraunhofer Group for Microelectronics will consider progress in ‘New Paradigms‘ such as device technologies, quantum computing and neuromorphic processing.

Meanwhile within the main speaking menu, other cross-pollenating topics will be highlighted such as secure data transfer, the use of silicon-on-insulator for the IoT as well as the current state of that supply chain, and what advanced lithography can deliver on the way to 5nm.

All of these and more of the talks address areas where design and IP find it increasingly hard to stand apart from the rest of the electronics systems sector.

So, clean off the barbecue on Sunday, check out the full ES Design West/SEMICON West agenda, and also see which of your partners you will have the chance to visit.
